Get to Know the People Behind the Mission

In 2022, Paul and I (Meike) began a journey that changed our lives forever. I’m originally from Germany and moved to Kenya in 2007. For years, I was a single mother until my son left to study in Europe in 2014. Paul and I met in 2019, and we quickly realized we shared the same passions and dreams.

Paul’s late mother was the first farmer in the region, at a time when the Kamba tribe was still hunting and gathering. Paul spent his holidays on the family farm, helping his mother with sales and distribution. After she passed away, the farm was abandoned because no one in the family had the passion to continue fighting against climate change.

Together, Paul and I saw an opportunity to revive the land and make a lasting impact. We moved from the busy Kenyan coast to the rural farm. The challenges were great, but the potential was even greater. We found a land suffering from drought, abandoned animals, and a struggling community. Instead of turning away, we embraced the challenge.

Our mission became clear: to revive the land with sustainable farming, provide a safe space for animals, and support the local community through knowledge-sharing and cultural exchange. Each challenge—whether it was lack of water, harsh weather, or limited resources—only strengthened our determination to lead this cause.

What started small has grown into something much bigger. Today, we are protectors of the environment, advocates for animal welfare, and guides for those seeking authentic experiences in Kenya. Through Plantbase Kasemeini, our farm has become a sanctuary for rescued animals, a training center for sustainable farming, and a place for visitors to reconnect with nature, themselves, and a greater purpose.
